Extraction: Overlooked Action Masterpiece

One movie I think is really underrated is Extraction (2020) with Chris Hemsworth. It was a Netflix original and suffered the fate of many straight-to-streaming films in that it didn't get the exposure of a cinema release. It also didn't get glowing reviews from everyone, but for an action film, it truly is one of the best in its genre.

It was a directorial debut from Sam Hargrave, who previously worked as a stunt coordinator, and it's for that reason this film is impressive in the areas that matter: action and stunts. The highlight is a 12-minute single-take action sequence that's just mind-blowing, taking the audience into the heart of an urban warzone. It's a genuine adrenaline rush from start to finish and an impressive technical feat.

For me, it's a great example of a visceral, gripping action film that doesn't get enough love for how well it does what it is meant to do. If you haven't seen it, you're in for a wild ride.

The Fall: Visual Feast of Storytelling

One film that often flies under the radar but deserves a spotlight is "The Fall" directed by Tarsem Singh. Released in 2006, this visually stunning movie blends fantasy and reality in a touching narrative about storytelling itself. The film was praised for its groundbreaking aesthetics and imaginative landscapes, which were all shot on location across over 20 countries. The ambitious vision and unique artistic direction set "The Fall" apart from more conventional films, yet it remains largely uncelebrated by mainstream audiences.

The performances, especially by Lee Pace and young Catinca Untaru, are notably sincere and compelling. They bring to life a story within a story, where a stuntman, bedridden from an accident, forms an unlikely friendship with a little girl by telling her an epic tale that mirrors his emotional turmoil and quest for redemption. Their interaction is not only heartwarming but also enriches the narrative layers of the film. Singh's creation is a testament to the power of visual storytelling and the art of cinema itself, deserving of greater recognition for its innovation and emotional depth. It's a perfect example of a movie that combines artistry with a powerful narrative, making it a must-watch for those who cherish films that linger in memory long after the final scene.

Coherence: Low-Budget Sci-Fi Mind-Bender

Coherence (2013) is one of those mind-bending, indie sci-fi films that flew under the radar but absolutely deserves more love. Shot in just five days on a micro-budget with largely improvised dialogue, it tells the story of a dinner party that spirals into multiverse chaos when a comet passes overhead.

It's like Primer meets The Twilight Zone, but with real emotional stakes and relationships at its core.

What makes Coherence so special is how it builds tension without flashy effects--it relies on tight storytelling, clever use of space, and a creeping sense of dread that lingers long after the credits roll. It's a masterclass in doing more with less, and it shows how science fiction can be deeply personal and cerebral at the same time.

If it had had a bigger marketing push or a more mainstream cast, I think it would be talked about in the same breath as Ex Machina or The Invitation.

Walter Mitty: Inspiring Journey of Self-Discovery

As the Founder and CEO of Zapiy.com, I find inspiration in many places, including film. One movie that I believe has been unfairly overlooked is The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). On the surface, it might seem like a typical feel-good adventure film, but there are deeper qualities at play that make it much more than that.

What stands out to me is the film's exploration of personal growth, courage, and the pursuit of dreams. Walter Mitty, played by Ben Stiller, starts as a man living an unremarkable life, full of fantasies but not much action. Throughout the movie, he steps outside his comfort zone in ways that force him to confront his fears and push boundaries. This resonates deeply with my own experience as a founder, where stepping into the unknown and taking risks are a constant part of the journey.

The movie's cinematography is also stunning, capturing the beauty of the world in a way that emphasizes the contrast between Mitty's previously confined existence and the expansive possibilities that await when you decide to break free from your own limitations. The contrast between his internal life and the physical journey he embarks on is visually striking, making it a powerful metaphor for how transformative change can be.

Furthermore, the film has a subtle but important commentary on the importance of living authentically. In the business world, it's easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget why you started in the first place. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty reminds us that the pursuit of something meaningful--whether in life or business--often requires us to take bold steps and embrace vulnerability.

Despite these qualities, the movie didn't receive the level of recognition it deserved, perhaps because it doesn't fit neatly into any one genre or because of its somewhat whimsical tone. However, the film's powerful message about personal transformation and living with purpose makes it a gem that is certainly worthy of more attention. It's a reminder that, whether in business or life, we're capable of more than we often believe--and that the greatest rewards often come when we take a leap into the unknown.
